REFLECTION
Horsemen in the days of old represent the military powers of kingdoms and those who have them in abundance are more likely to be feared by opponents and seen as super powers. That is why the theme: the divine horsemen represent the might of the Almighty who captains unbeatable armies of all time. He has ability as the creator to command all creations to our defense in this battle called life.
For us, as it was to the postexilic Israelites, to benefit from God’s divine protection, we ought to return to the Lord of Host (Zech. 1:3). Returning to the Lord requires true repentance. For this we must know; the Lord’s promises of blessings must be preceded by genuine repentance. Though God’s promises are assured by the immutability of His Word, His people are not to divorce divine grace from human responsibility. In our days, many want to enjoy the blessings of God without returning to Him. Beloved, do not be deceived, returning to God is a prerequisite to divine blessing. The actual injunction was Return to me….and I will return to you (NRSV), expressing the result of repentance. The Lord will not return in manifest fellowship and blessing to His people until they manifest their faith in Him by repentance, for God is approachable by human only on the basis of faith (Heb.11:6).
Zechariah’s proclamations span centuries and realized ultimately in the Jewish hope regarding the restoration of the Kingdom to Israel (Acts 1:16). Though it had a ministry of consolation and encouragement to the remnant of Babylonian exile, the real fulfilment of this proclamation is futuristic awaiting Christ’s second advent where all things will be made anew. That is why returning to God is as important to us in the 21st century as it was to the remnant of the Babylonian exile in the days of the prophet Zechariah.
There are divine horsemen even in our days too to fight our course if we will return to Him, but most of us are very far from God who is all-holy. Most of the destruction in our day will have come to naught if we who are called by His Name will surrender our will for His, and allow Him to be the Lord of our lives. God has all it takes to win the psychological, spiritual, economical, ecological, you name it, battles of our time. As the marshal of the celestial and terrestrial armies, He is beloved, the architect of history and prophesy, and is intimately concerned with the affairs of the earth, particularly as they affect the fortune of those who are called by His name.
The colour red in Zechariah 1:8 symbolizes bloodshed and war and comprehends in fullness the prophetic scope of Christ, who as a result of our redemption was brought at the first advent. Look! He will come in the second advent in His glory to ‘judge and make war’ (Rev.19:11; Isa. 63:1-6). That is why we as a nation, society or individuals must return to Him now in order to rule with Him on His return.
CONCLUSION
Beloved in the Lord Jesus the Christ, God who controls all things: both seen and unseen, is ever ready to give us divine security in this unsafe world. He is ready to bless us with all heavenly blessings and restore our lost glory as stated in Zechariah 1:17 to us. All we need is to return to God the Lord of our souls. If we return to God, we will see Him in all other creations. We will relate better with Him the creator and His creations, and our world and life will never be the same. He is our rock and our salvation.
PRAYER
Lord Almighty, I need your presence. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and cause me to experience your presence now than ever before as I return to you in true repentance in Jesus Name. Amen
