LENT REFLECTION (DAY 6)

Getting rid of idols is the theme for our reflection today. To get rid is to throw away or otherwise dispose of something. An idol is a person or thing that is greatly admired, loved, or revered. The theme is inviting us to give less importance to people or things that are of so much importance to us that they become an obstacle or an impediment to our commitment to God.

Many of us constantly find ourselves in dilemma of diligently following Jesus or paying attention to other things and neglecting our calling as dedicated disciples of Jesus. Jesus makes it unequivocally clear “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62). In other words, when you decide to follow Jesus, nothing in this world is worth your attention for which you should give an excuse for not availing yourself for God’s mission in the world and the ministry of His Word. Anything that easily takes your attention from diligently following Jesus and doing His work is an idol. You greatly admire, love and revere that person or thing more than the Lord Jesus Christ. The question we ought to reflect on is “what easily takes your attention from a life of dedication or worship to God?” For many of our youth, it the addiction to sports and sports betting. Some will gladly skip Church service to go watch their favorite teams. Others are obsessed with social media platforms like TicTok, Instagram, Facebook, Whatsapp and the like. For some people, pornography, drug addiction, clubing, entertainment and sex addiction are their idols. The biggest idol that has hindered most believers from dedicating their lives to God is money or wealth creation. Many Christians of our time will give myriad of excuses with their work and businesses when it comes to proving their allegiance and love for Jesus. No wonder a great majority of Christians in our time are mere Sunday and occasional worshippers who lack the zeal for prayer and passion for the study of God’s Word.

Dear friend until you get rid of the idol in your life you will remain part of the group Jesus will address as “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Luke 7:21-23). Lent season offers an opportunity get rid of the idols in our lives through prayer, fasting and Bible studies. Let us take advantage of the lent season and do the needful as believers. Shalom.
