PASSION WEEK REFLECTIONS
The theme for our reflection is, strength for the time when we are weak. It is refreshing and rejuvenating to see friends coming to our aid in times of trouble. We are strengthened emotionally even when we appear to be physically weak by virtue of the agony we find ourselves in when friends and family show concern and support.
Jesus could not find strength from His disciples, especially Peter, who vowed that “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.” (Luke 22:33-34). Surely, when the time came for him to fulfill his promise, he denied Jesus three times, “the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.” (Luke 22:61-62)
It is important to note that at all times Jesus relied on His father for His strength. It is for this reason that when He was vulnerable and was going through persecution unjustly, He said “…But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” (Luke 22:69). The key lesson for today’s reflection is that human beings may be promise-breakers and unpredictable therefore, they may not be the source of strength for the time when we are weak or overwhelmed by agony but “…He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” ( 1 Thessalonians 5:24) David confirms this fact when he wrote that “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” (Psalm 23:5-6) Shalom.
PRAYER
Almighty God, we are weak and helpless without your presence in our lives, may the Holy Spirit continue to sustain and strengthen us even us we endure persecutions and agony on account of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen
