REFLECTION
Getting organised is the theme for our reflection. Getting organised means to arrange one’s things or one’s affairs so they can be dealt with effectively. The number of believers were increasing under the leadership of the Apostles in the early Church. These believers came from different ethnic backgrounds, “…a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.” (Acts 6:1)
To get the distribution well organized, “..the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “…It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.” (Acts 6:2-3)
It is important to note that the ministry of the Lord is enormous. A pastor cannot perform all the functions in the Church. It is for this purpose there must be a proper organization that allows others who are of good repute, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom to help the pastor shepherd or cater for the spiritual, emotional and material needs of the congregants. Effective Christian ministry takes place when there is proper planning and organisation whereby competent people of good repute, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom are appointed to serve the Lord in different ministries and capacities in the Church. The preaching or teaching of the Gospel must be the priority of the body of Christ followed by other services to God and the people, it is for this reason the Apostles said “…we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” (Acts 6:4). In other words, the Word of God is central to every activity of the church and the believer’s life therefore it must be constantly taught and fed upon. Where there is poor organisation and the leaders of the church seem to be doing all the work of the Lord, they burn out and become frustrated and the preaching of the Word is relegated to the background. We must pray and rely on the Holy Spirit for proper planning or strategic organisation so that the Pastor will focus on preaching and teaching the Word so that others may also serve in other capacity to enhance the growth and development of the church. Shalom.
PRAY
Almighty God, equip and bless the church with men and women of good repute, full of the Holy Spirit and Wisdom to serve in the ministry of the Church so that the core mandate or mission of preaching and teaching the Gospel to save souls and sustain the faith of the believers may never be frustrated or misplaced. Amen.
