REFLECTION

Wisdom and folly is the theme for our reflection. Wisdom is the the ability  to use one’s knowledge of God’s Word and experience in life to make good decisions and judgement. Folly on the other hand, is the lack of good sense or normal prudence and foresight. King Solomon draws a sharp contrast between wisdom and folly when he says “Dead flies make the perfumer’s ointment give off a stench; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor. A wise man’s heart inclines him to the right, but a fool’s heart to the left.” (Ecclesiastes 10:1-2). In other words, no matter how wise you are or have been, an act of foolishness or folly could destroy your hard earned reputation, wisdom and honor. It therefore goes to reason that we must be consistent in our pursuit and application of wisdom in everything we do and everywhere we find ourselves as believers. We must have zero tolerance for folly.

Dear friend, if “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. (Proverbs 9:10), then lack of the fear of the Lord is the beginning of folly and lack of knowledge of the Holy One is ignorance. In other words a person who does not fear the Lord nor have a relationship with Him will lack wisdom and act sinfully and in unwise ways. A person who fears the Lord is most likely going to consider and weigh his or her actions according to the standards set by God in His Word before he or she speaks or acts, however a man or woman of folly  or who lacks wisdom is not guided by any Biblical or godly principles therefore his or her actions are most likely going to be sinful and abominable to the Lord. A wise and God-fearing man or woman will not indulge in immoral acts but a fool who lacks the knowledge of God’s Word will indulge in immorality and without any regret and remorse. They will not hid to the advise of the wise but will be supported, hailed and encouraged by like minded fools. This explains the reason why people exhibit all manner of immoral and self-destructive conducts such nudity, violence and pornography on social media yet we have a host of people liking their pages and giving them encouraging comments. The wise person who tries to correct the folly is rather subjected to insults and derogatory comments by the like minded group of fools. We are certainly not in normal times, we are in an era where wisdom and integrity is attacked but folly and immortality is hailed, we are in an era where wisdom is hated with passion but folly is loved and made the norm rather than the forbidden. We are in an era where there are only few wise people in the camp of wisdom but a myriad of fools in the camp of folly. To be at the camp of wisdom or the camp of folly is a choice or a personal decision one has to make but each camp comes with its ramifications. It is for this purpose, Joshua admonished the Isrealites “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15) Again, after the people heard Peter preach, “…they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:37-38). True wisdom and pleasing God is found in the Salvation of our Lord Jesus Christ but folly is found in a life of disobedience and estrangement from the Lord. Shalom.

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, we chose wisdom over folly therefore grant us a humble spirit to fear the Lord and be continually wise in receiving insights that will enable us live a life pleasing to the Holy One and for our Salvation. Amen

  1. A very strong message especially in the time we are living in where wisdom is shunned and foolishness is the norm
