REFLECTION

The peace of Christ is the theme for our reflection. The common and worldly understanding of peace is freedom from disturbance or a state or period in which there is no war or the absence of war. The big question is: Is the world truly free from disturbance? Can the world truly experience peace as result of a total absence of war or conflict? A critical reflection on the worldly concept of peace leads to the conclusion that peace as conceived by the world is illusionary and certainly a mirage. However, the peace of Christ is the assurance of God’s presence or glory in our lives as a result of our redemption and relationship with Him, in this relationship, the Holy Spirit comforts us and give us joy even in turbulent situations or challenges. With the peace of Christ, we remain hopeful and confident in faith that regardless of our circumstances in life, our Redeemer lives therefore we smile at the storm, overcome fear and depression. It is for this reason, Jesus assures us that “the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:26-27)

Beloved in Lord, experiencing the peace of Christ in our lives leads to a thankful disposition even in the midst of challenges. It is for this reason, Paul wrote that “…let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:15-17). In other words, when we truly experience the peace of Christ we are able to live a life of gratitude which is expressed and shared with others through thankgiving rather than living a life of discontentment which makes us unable to count our blessings and focus on the grace and goodness of God. However, It is important to note that we cannot experience the peace of Christ if we remain unrepentant or continue to live in sin and guilt, it is only through repentance and accepting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour that we are able to experience His peace. In his last moment on the cross with Jesus, the repentant criminal received salvation and experienced peace of Christ when he said to Jesus “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:42-43).

Dear friends, wherever the peace of Christ reigns we experience compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience and love among the fellowship of believers or children of God. (Colossians 3:12-14). Where the foregoing virtues are absent the peace of Christ cannot be experienced. May we continue to experience the peace of Christ wherever we find ourselves as believers. Shalom.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, may we continue to experience your peace in a world of chaos and uncertainties. Amen.
