REFLECTIONS

The theme for our reflection is, don’t worry. Worry is the state of being anxious and troubled over actual or potential problems. What then is the major cause of worry in life? The major source or cause of worry to humanity is the struggle to survive through the acquisition of the basic necessities of life. Examples of the basic necessities of life are food, clothing and shelter. These things have also been the cause of disputes or wars between ethnic groups and nations.

The focus of today’s reflection is, should a believer worry about the basic necessities of life? Jesus offers us the answer and assurance that “…do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?” (Matthew 6:25-27) In other words, worry adds nothing substantial to our lives.

It is important to note that although worry adds nothing useful or substantial to our lives, some people nevertheless continue to worry. Many Christians in our time continue to be anxious or worry about the basic necessities of life to the extent that they become fearful, restless and hardly sleep peacefully at night. The diagnosis for this spiritual, emotional and physical malady of worry is lack of faith. Jesus offers us a prescription, “…For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matthew 6:32-34). In others words, faith in God is the antidote to anxiety or worry. When you have God you have everything since He is the creator of the universe and knows all our needs. It is for this reason, when Jeremiah entertained fear when God called him, the Lord told him “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;” (Jeremiah 1:5). Let us again be reminded that before God created Adam and Eve, He had already provided their basic necessities in abundance. He created everything that they will ever need on earth for their comfortable stay and enjoyment. (Genesis 1:26-31)

Dear friend in the Lord, I do not know your current worries but I believe that God has an insurance policy for you, this insurance policy has a one time premium which totally takes away all your worries. This premium is faith. Have faith in God’s Do-Not-Worry insurance policy to have your worries taken care of. Having faith in the Lord is not an excuse for laziness or idleness. Faith means, working to acquire the basic necessities of life but trusting the Lord to bless our efforts. Paul encourages us not to worry for “… God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Phillipians 4:19) Shalom

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, strengthen our faith so that we shall not worry but continually experience the presence and peace of the Lord both in times of abundance and in want. Amen.
