REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “Written on our hearts – the law in our hearts” The theme means that the Word or the commandment of God shall be cherished and obeyed by God’s people because it is inscribed in their hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit. We shall meditate on the fact that there is no restoration without obedience to God’s law which is written in our hearts through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.
Beloved in the Lord, one of the prophetic assurances God gave to Israel through Jeremiah was that after He had liberated them from captivity in Babylon, there would be a spiritual restoration and transformation through a new covenant. In this new covenant, the Lord assured them, “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. (Jeremiah 31:33). It is important to note that in the new covenant, the requirement of becoming God’s people is based on the fact that His law is in our minds and written in our hearts. How can God’s law be in our minds and written in our hearts? The only way God’s law can be in our minds and written on our hearts under the new covenant is through Jesus Christ who is the fulfilment of the law, the only way and truth that leads us to God. Jesus Christ said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (Matthew 5:17). Again He assured us that “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” (John 14:6-7) We are also greatly enlightened by John that Jesus is indeed the Word or Law of God that predates the creation and existence of the world. John reveals to us that Jesus is the source of life and light of the world when He wrote, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. (John 1:1-4). Dear friends, it is impossible for a person to be saved if he or she does not have the incarnated Word of God in the person of Jesus living in his or her mind and heart. It is for this reason Jesus said “19… So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. (Revelation 3:19-20). Through repentance and accepting Jesus as Lord and Saviour, the living Law or Word of God is written in our hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit. It means that if we reject Jesus Christ, we cannot understand the commandment of God and have it written in our hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus came to show us the way, how to fulfil the law, please God and be saved through Him. We must therefore endeavour to have a personal relationship with Jesus and continue to study the Scripture and follow Jesus’s perfect example to have the Law or Word of God written in our hearts through Him.
In summary, we have deliberated on the theme “Written on our hearts- the Law in our heart”. We have discovered that there is no restoration without obedience to God’s law which is written in our hearts through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Shalom.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, strengthen us to live according to the perfect example of Jesus who is God’s Word incarnate in our hearts. May we continue to be restored, revived and transformed through our relationship with Jesus Christ who has become our salvation and the written law or Word of God in our hearts. Amen.
