THE SON OF GOD (JOHN 1:43-51)
REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “The Son of God”. A son is a male child. The Son of God means the male child of God. God has only one male Child and this child is Jesus Christ. (John 3:16) Jesus is the Son of God because He shares the same divine attributes and nature with God. In our reflections, we shall reflect on the fact that Jesus is the Son of God because He is omniscient.
Beloved in the Lord, Jesus is the Son of God because He shares the omniscient attribute with God, His Father. To be omniscient means to be all-knowing or possess infinite awareness, understanding, and insight. Human beings are limited in their ability to know everything but Jesus knows everything and the thought of everyone. For this reason, “When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” 48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” 50 Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.” (John 1:47-51). After the Samaritan woman had met Jesus, we again see the omniscience of Jesus Christ when the Samaritan woman “….went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him…Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers. 42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.” (John 4:28-30,39-42). For the Samaritans, apart from Jesus being omniscient, He is also the Saviour of the world. The disciples further confessed that Jesus is the Son of God because He is all-knowing or omniscient, “Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.” (John 16:30)
Beloved in the Lord, like Philip and other disciples, Jesus is saying to us, “Follow me.” (John 1:43). Jesus the Son of God gives us great confidence and assurance that because He is omniscient or all-knowing, he understands who we are, our needs and future aspirations. He knows the future and what lies ahead of us in the new year and beyond. All He requires from us to respond to His call to follow Him as true disciples, to be faithful and obedient to Him. Jesus assures us, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. (John 14:12-14). Dear friend, it is good to know great people in life but knowing Jesus and having a personal relationship with Him is the greatest thing that can ever happen to anyone because Jesus is omniscient and watches over us whereas others are not. Again, our relationship with Him as the Son of God assures us of our salvation and eternal life. We are greatly encouraged to respond to His call and to walk with Jesus, the Son of God, all the days of our lives. Christmas reminds us that the omniscient Son of God is in our midst therefore we no longer have to fear or lose hope but trust Him for our Salvation.
In summary, we have reflected on the theme, “The Son of God”. We have been reminded of the fact that ” Jesus is the Son of God because He is omniscient like His Father. We are to respond to His call and follow Him because He understands our situation, knows the future and will grant us eternal life. Shalom.
PRAYER
We praise and honour Jesus, the omniscient Son of God for identifying our sinfulness and calling us to follow Him so that we shall be made worthy and also become instruments of transformation in the world. May our faith be made strong in the Son of God, for we believe that our prayers remain answered because He is Omniscient and faithful. Amen.
