WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? (JOHN 1:35-39)
REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is, “What are you looking for?” To look for something or someone means that the thing or person is important or needed. We shall reflect on the fact that Jesus will not turn us away when we look for Him.
Beloved in the Lord, Jesus will never turn us away when we look for Him. We are told, “The next day John (the Baptist) was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” 39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon. (John 1:35-39) In other words, based on John’s revelation or testimony about Jesus, two of his disciples desired to have a personal encounter with Jesus. They looked for more than what the eyes could see or perceive. They desired to listen to the teachings or Good News of Jesus and to know Him more. Beloved in the Lord, those who preach to us in our congregations are like John the Baptist of our time, they point us to Jesus, “the Lamp of God”. It is not enough to listen to what others are saying about Jesus but we must be determined to look for Jesus and have a personal relationship with Him. Like the two disciples of John, let us begin the New Year desiring to know Christ the more through the listening, reading and studying of His Word, We yearn to be with Him each day of our lives. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. (Matthew 5:6) Again, we must look for Jesus and be with Him always because He has assured us that “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” (John 14:6-7). It is important to note that looking for Jesus is a personal decision, however, we must not only look for Jesus because of our existential needs but always look for Him with our hearts. We are greatly assured by Jeremiah that “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the LORD…” (Jeremiah 29:13-14)
In summary, we have reflected on the theme “What are you looking for?” We have discovered that Jesus will not turn us away when we look for Him. Looking for Him, must not only be done with our eyes but with our hearts through the reading and studying of His Word and following His perfect examples.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, we need you in our lives even as we begin a New Year. May Your teachings and perfect examples be our guide in the New Year and may we never depart from Your presence. Amen.
