THE GENERATION OF TERAH (GENESIS 11:27-32) LENT DAY 8

REFLECTION

The theme for reflection is “the Generation of Terah” A generation is all of the people born and living at about the same time. The generation of Terah means all the people Terah gave birth to who survived around the same time or period. We shall reflect on the fact that nothing is too hard for the Lord to do in our generation.

Beloved in the Lord, God does not need multitudes in a generation to fulfill His purpose. Terah was the father of Abraham and two others, Nahor and Haran (Genesis 11:27) When we compare earlier generations before Terah, from Genesis 11:10-26, we will realise two important facts. The first fact is that all others who came before Terah apart from Shem, gave birth between the ages of 29 -35 years, we may also include Shem, because even though he gave birth at age 100, he died at age 500. Terah however gave birth at age 70. It means that for the first time after 7 generations, Terah was the only one who gave birth at a ripe age of 70. “After Terah had lived 70 years…Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.” (Genesis 11:27)It was an unusual phenomenon in the family tree since it was a well know fact that the men usually gave birth at a tender or youthful age. Beloved in the Lord, one of the key lesson we learn from Terah and his generation is that delay is not denial. Success may come early in other people’s lives but may come later in the lives of others. We believers must trust God and be greatly encouraged by the story of Terah and his generation that we may be faced with unusual challenges in our time or era, that not even the generations before us had ever encountered before, however, “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28) Let us always remember that “…the battle is the LORD’s…” (1 Samuel 17:47). Conversely, God can give you and your generation an unprecedented breakthrough that will further open doors of greatness to the generations to come. It is for this reason, the Angel of the Lord asked Abraham when their child’ was not forthcoming “Is anything too hard for the LORD? (Genesis 18:14). Beloved in the Lord, I do not know your dreams and ambitions in life but remember that delay is not denial and nothing is too hard for the Lord. Your marriage, employment, promotion, success in business may delay but it is never a denial, God’s time is not only perfect but the best.

The second fact we discover in Terah’s story and that of his generation is that, when we read from Genesis 11:10-26, All who came before Terah, gave birth to sons and daughters but Terah gave birth to three boys and even lost one before his own eyes. We are told “Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot. 28 While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the land of his birth (Genesis 11:27-28). Apart from Terah not giving birth early, he gave birth to only three sons and lost one. When he was expecting more grandchildren a part from Lot, Sarah, Abram’s wife’ “….was childless because she was not able to conceive.” (Genesis 11:30). Despite all these misfortunes, God fulfilled His covenant promise to humanity with Abraham, who is a direct seed of Terah. No wonder Matthew starts the Genealogy of Jesus from Abraham in Matthew 1:1-2. Beloved in the Lord, although Terah and his generation were not many, yet God used them in the history of our salvation. Dear friends, Jesus assures us that ““With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26). Your beginning may be rough, uncertain and unpredictable. You may be wondering if you will ever make it in life looking at your current situation. I have come to assure this morning that your challenging beginning and current precarious situation can not stop God from glorifying Himself in your life. It is for this reason David assure us that “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” (Psalms 23:6)

In summary, we have reflected on the theme “The generation of Terah” We have discovered that nothing is too hard for the Lord to do in our generation. Let us remain faithful to Him in the Lent season and beyond even as we continue to experience His grace and mighty works in our lives.

PRAYER
Almighty God, we commit our family and generation into Your hands. Lead us and grant us success and greatness in all our endeavours. May our generation be a chosen generation to the glory of your Holy Name. Amen.

Thank you for the encouragement and compliments beloved in the Lord.
For Lent to be fruitful and effective, we need to be consistent with prayer and study of the Scripture. Again, we must be determined to put into practice the lesson we are learning from the Scripture. Spiritual growth takes place steadily when we are consistent.
