DO SOMETHING, LORD! (JEREMIAH 14:1-7)
REFLECTION
Do something, Lord! is the theme for reflection. Do something, Lord! is an urgent and fervent prayer or call on God to intervene in one’s precarious or fatal situation or challenging situations. We shall reflect on the fact our safety and protection are greatly compromised when we sever our relationship with God through disobedience, however, the Lord is not estranged from us when we remorsefully call on him to do something about our precarious situations.
Beloved in the Lord, Jeremiah, Israel suffered as a result of their disobedience or sinfulness. The consequences of their disobedient to the Lord are “.“Judah mourns, her cities languish; they wail for the land, and a cry goes up from Jerusalem” Jeremiah 14:2. There was a severe drought, and both human beings and animals were in dire need of food and water. (Jeremiah 14:3-6). When the drought became fatal or unbearable, the nation cried to the Lord, “Although our sins testify against us, do something, LORD, for the sake of your name. For we have often rebelled; we have sinned against you.” (Jeremiah 14:7) Dear friend, the initial stages of disobedience or pleasing ourselves is pleasurable but when the ramification of our actions come upon us in the form of suffering or hardship, we become miserable like the prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32, who upon realising his wretchedness, insecurity or lack of protection, said ” ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. (Luke 15:21-24).
We become vulnerable, weak and a target of satan when we sever our relationship with God by disobeying Him or living a life of unrepentance. We are assured in the book of Ezekiel when the Lord said “Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live? (Ezekiel 18:23) Again, Jesus revealed to us, For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17). Dear friend, what habit or character is preventing you from being faithful or obedient to God? Some of us are addicted to sin and this has separated us from God and has caused severe spiritual drought in our lives. Sexual immorality, substance abuse, deceit, corruption, and all manner of addictions have brought into our lives guilt and suffering. It is time for us to call on the Lord to do something in our lives today, “for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13).
In summary, we have discovered that our safety and protection are greatly compromised when we sever or cut our relationship with God through disobedience, however, the Lord is not estranged from us when we remorsefully call on Him to do something about our precarious situations. He will save us because He is merciful. Shalom.
PRAYER
Almighty, God, we surrender our weaknesses and addictions into our hands for spiritual cleansing and restoration. Lord, save us from sin, suffering, and your judgement. May the Holy Spirit dwell in us and strengthen us to live a righteous life. Amen.
