WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO FOR YOU? (MATTHEW 20:29-34)

REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “What do you want me to do for you? The theme is a question often posed by a person who is in a position to help others. Parents, often respond to the cries of their children, with the reassuring question “What do you want me to do for you?” This is the same question Jesus, posed to two blind men who called on His name for help. We shall reflect on the fact that in our frustration, weakness and helplessness, let us remember to pray or call on the compassionate Jesus who does not ignore the call of those who need His help.

Beloved in the Lord, in our frustration and helplessness, we have a dependable and compassionate Saviour and friend, who will not forsake us. When the blind men shouted “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” 31 The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” (Matthew 20:30-31) In other words, the crowd that was made of people who were familiar with the predicament of the these blind men ignored their cry for help. The crowd had written them off because they were deemed to nonentities and men of the street who ought to accept their fate. Sometimes the very people who know about our predicament turn to ignore us when we need them most. This is the tragedy of life! But Jesus was different from the crowd, “Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. 33 “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.” 34 Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.” (Matthew 20:32-34) Beloved in the Lord, Alan Jackson’s song “What a friend we have in Jesus” comes to mind, The third stanza says “

Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness
Take it to the Lord in prayer

O what peace we often forfeit
O what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer

Like the two blind men, irrespective of our weaknesses, struggles and the impediments or obstacles on our path to restoration, success or victory, we must never cease calling on the name of our Lord Jesus through faith and prayer because He has assured us that “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” (Luke 4:18-19) Beyond the healing power of Jesus, He has the power to redeem us spiritually from sin and eternal death. Those of us who are morally and spiritually blind must call on Jesus in repentance, for His compassionate, loving and forgiving. Jesus is asking us now, “What do you want me to do for you?” Depending on our situations, our prayer must be “Dear Lord, forgive me and deliver me from marital unfaithfulness, corruption, theft, hypocrisy, sexual immorality, lies, bitterness, unforgiveness, slander and any sinful desire and addiction that has held me captive” Jesus has assured us, For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17). Again, we those who are morally and spiritually blind have the confidence to call on Jesus for the recovery of sight because “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

In summary, we have discovered that in our frustration, weakness, and helplessness, we should pray or call on the compassionate Jesus who does not ignore the call of those who need His help.

PRAYER

Our compassionate Lord and Saviour, we come to you with our weaknesses and challenges, restore and make us whole again. Amen.
