BELONGING TOGETHER (SONG OF SONGS 6:1-13)

REFLECTION

Belonging together is the theme for our reflection. When lovers say that they belong together, they are expressing their closeness or commitment to each other. It means each partner in the relationship is important and both partners are mutually responsible for each other. We shall reflect on the fact that belonging together in a marriage relationship guarantees trust and security.

Beloved in the Lord, the greatest sense of trust and security of every human being is knowing that he or she belongs in a relationship. God created the institutions of marriage and family to ensure everyone experiences a sense of belongingness. The feeling of belonging creates an atmosphere of trust and security. It is for this reason that Solomon’s bride said “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine…” (Song of Songs 6:3). In other words, everyone in a marriage relationship must be able to trust his or her partner and feel secure in the relationship. Again, God created marriage with the purpose of belongingness and it is for this reason, we are told in Genesis 2:24, “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”

Friend in the Lord, we must experience trust, physical, emotional and financial security in our marriage relationship. It must be the mutual obligation of a husband and a wife to ensure there is the feeling of belongingness in the marriage. The essence of belonging is found in book of Ecclesiastes, when Solomon wrote “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour: 10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? (Ecclesiastes 4:9-11). We are greatly encouraged to create an atmosphere of belongingness where our spouses will trust us and also feel secure in all spheres of our marital life.

In summary, we have learned that belonging together in a marriage relationship guarantees trust and security. May the Holy Spirit sustain our marriage relationship with the bond of love and belongingness. Shalom.

Dear Lord, strengthen us to remain faithful to our spouses in the spirit of belongingness. Amen.
