BUILD ON A SURE FOUNDATION (1 CORINTHIANS 10:1-14)
REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is building on a sure foundation. The importance of building on a sure or formidable foundation cannot be overemphasized in the area of civil engineering and human development. The foundation of a structure is more important than the building blocks. The foundation determines the quality and durability of the structure.
In light of the above reason, Paul reminds the church of Corinth that before the Advent of Jesus’s first coming, God had already laid a spiritual foundation for His people through His covenant relationship with Israel of which Christ had hitherto been the spiritual rock of their Salvation. “…For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.” (1 Corinthians 10:4) One may wonder how Jesus was their rock if they physically preceded Him in time and space. My friend, John 1:1-4 further revealed the eternal and coexitent attributes of Jesus with God when John wrote that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.” In other words, Jesus was, is and continues to be the rock of our salvation as provided for us by God for our spiritual buildings.
The admonishment and lesson is to learn from history and not repeat the sins of idolatry, sexual immorality and things that put God to the test thereby destroying our spiritual and physical buildings (the body) (1 Corinthians 10:6-10). We must continue to study, obey the Scripture and build on Jesus, our sure foundation even as we prepare for the day of the Lord. “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:12-13) Let us not become spiritually complacent but totally rely on God in everything we do for God is faithful to us and will provide us the strength and enablement to overcome the temptations in our lives. In others words, the only way to please God and be saved is to build our lives on Jesus our sure or solid foundation. We must continually allow God’s Word to nurture and equip us to overcome the numerous temptations on our path to Salvation. Again, we must not grow weary over the storms that hit us hard because our lives are solidly built on a sure foundation, Jesus the Christ. He is with us through the power of the Holy Spirit to sustain and hold us firm until His second Advent. Shalom.
PRAYER
Almighty God, keep our spiritual buildings unshakable in a world of enticing materialism and immortality so that we live will glorify you through our Lord Jesus Christ who is the sure foundation of our salvation. Amen.
