CREATION GROANS (ROMANS 8:18-27)
REFLECTION
Creation groans is the theme for our reflection. To groan means to make a deep inarticulate sound conveying pain or despair. Paul uses the analogy of a woman in labour to describe how expectant but patient and hopeful the Roman Christians should be in their suffering in this corrupt world even as they await their redemption and salvation in Jesus Christ. “For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.” (Romans 8:20-25)
Beloved in the Lord, we need to be patient in enduring suffering on account of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The Resurrection, Ascension and promise of the return of our Lord Jesus Christ must continue to sustain our hope. No matter the struggle and temptations we go through, it will end in our salvation and glory just like a woman endures pains during childbirth but as soon the child is delivered, the joy she feels overcome the pain she felt. Paul, puts it this way, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” (Romans 8:18). Don’t give up my dear friend in suffering for Christ, your redemption and glory is bigger than your tribulation. Your redemption and glory are everlasting and will surely come. Shalom.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, if our suffering and groaning becomes unbearable on account of our discipleship, be our comforter and strength so that we may be faithful and patiently endure to the end. Amen.
