REFLECTION
“Sing a new song” is the theme for reflection. A song is a short poem or other set of words set to music or meant to be sung. The exiles of Israel were encouraged by the prophet Isaiah to sing a new song to express their praise to God for His faithfulness and redemption from captivity in Babylon. We shall reflect on the fact that we must have the habit of singing a new song of praise to glorify God for His faithfulness and mighty deeds in our lives even as we look forward to a brighter future,
Beloved in the Lord, the exile captivity in Babylon were exalted to sing a new song to God for faithfulness and glory even as the Lord fulfilled His promise to redeem them from captivity. “Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth… Let them give glory to the LORD and proclaim his praise in the islands. 13 The LORD will march out like a champion, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal; with a shout he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies” (Isaiah 42:10,12-13) The Israelites have been living in a state of despair and may have been wondering if God is still with them in captivity. The Lord commands them to sing a new song for He is faithful and shall fulfil His promise of redemption in their lives. Dear friend, sometimes we find ourselves in precarious situations because of our sins, bad decisions and unfaithfulness to God yet in that situation, we are commanded to sing a new song of hope and praise to God because God is still faithful and merciful to us. Again, for those who have a covenant relationship with God through Jesus and are going through challenges on account of our faith, we are greatly encouraged to sing a new song. When Paul and Silas, sang songs of praise in chains, they experienced the power of God’s redemption. Paul and Silas remind that singing a new song or songs of praise in times of adversity is a demonstration of our faith. We are told “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. (Acts 16:25-26). Beloved in the Lord, instead of complaining and singing old songs of hopelessness and lamentation, we are commanded and emboldened to sing a new song of hope, faith and praise to the Lord, believing that we shall overcome. Indeed, we agree with Charles Albert Tindly when he wrote the song, “We Shall Overcome”
We shall overcome
We shall overcome
We shall overcome some day
[Refrain]
Oh, deep in my heart
I do believe
We shall overcome some day
In summary, we have discovered that although we may be going through suffering and challenges, we must continue to sing a new song of praise to glorify God for His faithfulness and good works in the past, present and future. In His own time and according to His perfect will He shall save us and glorify His name. Shalom.
PRAYER
May the Holy Spirit strengthen our faith so that we shall always sing a new song hope, restoration and praise to God even as we await His day of redemption in our situations. Amen.
