REASSURANCE: DO NOT WORRY (MATTHEW 6:25-34)
REFLECTIONS
The theme for our reflection today is: Do not worry. Worry is that heavy feeling of being anxious or troubled by problems we face now or those we fear might happen in the future. But what is the main cause of worry? For most of us, it is the simple struggle to survive—the daily race to secure life’s basic necessities like food, clothing, and a roof over our heads. These very things have sparked bitter disputes and even wars between nations and ethnic groups throughout history. Today, we reflect on a powerful truth: faith and trust in God are the only things that can truly overcome the weight of anxiety.
The heart of our message today is a simple question: should a believer spend their life worrying about basic needs? Jesus gives us a beautiful assurance: “…do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?” (Matthew 6:25-27) In these words, Jesus invites us to trust God completely. He reminds us that worry adds nothing of value to our lives. In fact, it does the opposite—it drains us emotionally, hurts us physically, and weakens our spiritual connection with the Father.
Even though we know worry is fruitless, many of us still carry it like a heavy burden. Many Christians today are so overwhelmed by the cost of living and the needs of tomorrow that they are drowning in a sea of fear. They find themselves restless, unable to find even a moment of peaceful sleep. The diagnosis for this spiritual and emotional struggle is often a lack of faith. Thankfully, Jesus provides the perfect prescription: “…For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matthew 6:32-34). Faith in God is the only true antidote to anxiety. When you have God, you have everything, because He is the Creator of the entire universe and knows your needs before you even speak them. As the Lord assured Jeremiah: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;” (Jeremiah 1:5). Remember, before God even created Adam and Eve, He had already filled the Garden of Eden with everything they would ever need. He prepared a world of abundance for them to enjoy long before they drew their first breath (Genesis 1:26-31).
Dear friend, I do not know what is weighing on your heart today, but I believe God has a special “insurance policy” for you. This policy has a one-time premium that removes the burden of fear: that premium is faith. When you put your trust in God’s “Do-Not-Worry” policy, He takes charge of your concerns. This does not mean we should be lazy or idle. Instead, it means we work hard to provide for ourselves while trusting that the Lord will bless our efforts and fill the gaps. As Paul encourages us: “…my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)
Shalom.
SUMMARY
In summary, we have reflected on the theme “Do not worry.” We have discovered that true peace is found when we stop carrying the world on our shoulders and start trusting in God’s providence. Faith is the bridge that carries us over the river of anxiety.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
I come before You today acknowledging that I often let the cares of this world weigh me down. Forgive me for the times I have forgotten that You are my Provider and my Protector. Lord, I hand over my worries about food, shelter, and the future into Your capable hands. Help me to seek Your Kingdom first, trusting that You already know exactly what I need.
Grant me the peace that passes all understanding. Calm my restless heart and give me a spirit of faith instead of fear. Bless the work of my hands, and may I always remember that I am more valuable to You than the birds of the air or the lilies of the field. Thank You for Your love and Your constant care.
In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
