Reflection: But Do Not Be Afraid; I Am With You

The theme “But do not be afraid; I am with you” is a powerful reminder of God’s constant presence in our lives. In this context, to be “afraid” means to feel a sense of dread or anxiety about the future, especially when facing opposition. To have God “with you” means to possess His divine protection, strength, and approval, regardless of the circumstances. The key lesson in Matthew 10:24-42 is that following Jesus requires courage and total commitment, but we can find peace because our value to God is immeasurable.

In this passage, Jesus is preparing His twelve disciples for their mission. He gives them a “mission briefing,” honestly explaining that they will face many challenges. He warns them that if people mistreated Him, the Master, they would certainly mistreat His followers. However, in the midst of these warnings, He offers deep, lasting comfort.

Lessons on Courage and Faith

One of the most important lessons Jesus teaches is that we must prioritise the fear of God over the fear of people. In Matthew 10:28, He says, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” This reminds us that human opposition is temporary. For example, a person might face mockery at work or school for their faith. While this is painful, Jesus encourages us to look at the bigger picture. Our eternal security is in God’s hands, not in the hands of those who criticise us.

Another beautiful lesson is the depth of God’s personal care for us. Jesus uses a simple illustration from nature to show how much we matter. He says in Matthew 10:29-31: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” If God takes notice of a tiny bird, He is certainly aware of every detail of your life. When you lose a job or feel lonely, you can take heart knowing that the Creator of the universe is watching over you with great detail.

Finally, Jesus teaches about the importance of loyalty. He explains that choosing Him might sometimes cause tension, even within families. He states in Matthew 10:37, “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” This is a call to put God first in our hearts. When we put Him first, everything else in our lives finds its proper place. Taking up our cross means being willing to follow Him even when the path is difficult.

Conclusion

In summary, this scripture teaches us that while the world may be challenging, we have no reason to live in fear. We are encouraged to fear God rather than man, to trust in His intimate care for us, and to remain loyal to Him above all else. Jesus promises that if we acknowledge Him before others, He will acknowledge us before His Father in heaven.

The call to action for us today is to step out in faith. Do not let fear stop you from doing what is right or sharing your faith with others. Trust that God knows your situation and that you are incredibly valuable to Him. Let His presence be your strength today.

Prayer

Gracious Father, thank You for the promise that You are always with us. We ask for the courage to face our fears and the strength to put You first in everything we do. Help us to remember that we are worth more than many sparrows and that we are never alone. May Your Spirit guide us to be bold witnesses of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
