REFLECTION

The Day of Pentecost is a sacred time set aside to commemorate the fulfilment of Jesus’ promise: the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Church. Our theme for this glorious celebration is “Empowered by the Spirit for God’s Mission.”

This empowerment is not for our own entertainment or status; it is the supernatural enablement of the Holy Spirit to equip believers to carry out God’s redemptive work in a broken world. To understand how we are equipped for this divine task, we shall examine two crucial truths about being empowered by the Spirit:

  1. Missionary empowerment requires an intimate relationship with the Sender.
  2. Without the Spirit’s empowerment, the Church cannot fulfil its mission.

1. Missionary empowerment requires an intimate relationship with the Sender

The Holy Spirit is a coequal member of the Godhead. Therefore, it is impossible to experience the driving power of the Spirit if we are disconnected from the Father and the Son. In Numbers 11:24-30 and John 20:19-23, we see a consistent pattern: those whom God calls into a deep relationship are the very ones He equips with the Holy Spirit for His mission.

If we truly desire to be effective tools in God’s hands, we must first answer His call to become faithful, submissive disciples of Jesus Christ.

Think of God as a massive power station or a hydroelectric dam. The Holy Spirit is the active electric current flowing out, and we, the believers, are the power cables. If a cable is completely disconnected from the power house, no electricity can flow through it.

The sad reality in the twenty-first century is that many people fill church pews but remain entirely disconnected from God, the true source of spiritual power. We frequently find ourselves more connected to our specific denominations, traditions, or social groups than to the Source of our faith.

When this happens, we become powerless cables. We might look the part, but the transforming power of the Spirit is missing because we have become carnally minded. As the Apostle Paul reminds us:

“Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” 1 Corinthians 2:12-14

To be used for God’s mission, we must first make sure our connection to the Powerhouse is secure.

2. Without the Spirit’s empowerment, the Church cannot fulfil its mission.

Left to our own human strength, human wisdom, and human programs, the Church is completely powerless against the spiritual darkness of this world. Jesus knew this, which is why He commanded His disciples to wait. On the day of Pentecost, “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them” (Acts 2:4).

Look at the immediate impact of this empowerment on the Apostle Peter. The same man who had recently shrunk back in fear and denied Jesus was suddenly filled with supernatural boldness. He stepped forward, addressed a massive, sceptical crowd, and declared the fulfilment of prophecy:

“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy… And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” Acts 2:17-18, 21

What can the Church genuinely accomplish without the Holy Spirit? Nothing of eternal value. Every single generation of the Church needs this exact same divine fire to function effectively. A church attempting to do ministry without the power of the Holy Spirit is just a social club—it is spiritually dead. The Spirit is what transforms our ordinary words into arrows of conviction that lead people to salvation.

Conclusion

In summary, we cannot separate the gift of the Spirit from the work of the Gospel. We have been empowered by the Spirit for God’s Mission. As we have discovered, this requires us to maintain an active, vibrant relationship with God, recognising that without His Spirit, our efforts in this world are completely powerless.

May we remain faithful disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ, staying firmly plugged into the divine Powerhouse, so that we may be powerfully deployed to impact our world for His kingdom. Amen.
