REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “EQUIPPED TO SERVE” This theme reminds us that God does not call people who are already perfect. Instead, He gives us exactly what we need to do His work. To understand this theme, we need to look at two important keywords: “equipped” and “serve”. To be equipped means to be given the right tools, skills, or gifts for a specific task. To serve means to help, care for, or work for the good of others rather than ourselves. The key lesson in our main Scripture is that God gives every believer special spiritual gifts, and these gifts are meant to be used to help everyone in the church and for the furtherance of the mission of God in the world.
This message was originally written by the Apostle Paul to the Christians living in the ancient city of Corinth. The church in Corinth was very lively, but it had a big problem: the believers were arguing about which spiritual gifts were the best. Some people felt they were more important because of their gifts, while others felt left out. Paul wrote this letter to correct them and to teach them that every single gift comes from the same God and has the same purpose.
The main Scripture text shows us how God distributes these gifts. The Bible says: “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-6). This teaches us that unity does not mean everyone has to be exactly the same. Just like a human body has different parts like eyes, ears, and hands, the church has different members with different abilities. However, all these gifts come from the exact same Source—the Holy Spirit. No one can brag about their gift, because it is a gracious gift free from God, not something we earned.
Furthermore, the Scripture explains the true purpose of these gifts. The Bible states: “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” (1 Corinthians 12:7). This means our gifts are not given to make us look good or to make us famous. They are given to help and edify the church.
For example, if you are blessed with the ability to encourage people, you should use that gift to comfort someone who is going through a hard time. If you are good at organising things, you can use that skill to help your local church or community group run smoothly. Even a simple act of welcoming visitors at the church door is a way of serving. Another part of the Bible supports this by saying: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10). When we use our time and talents to help others, we are acting as God’s helpers on earth.
In conclusion, being “EQUIPPED TO SERVE” means recognizing that God has placed something special inside each of us. We have learned that these gifts come from the same Holy Spirit and are meant to bring us together, not to divide us. Most importantly, our talents are given to us for the common good of everyone around us.
Now, the call to action for each of us is to look inward and ask ourselves: “How am I using what God has given me?” Do not sit on the sidelines or think that your contribution does not matter. The church and the world need the unique gifts that you carry. Let us step forward with confidence, knowing that God has already given us everything we need to make a difference. Let us choose to serve one another with love and humility today.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for equipping me with unique gifts and talents. Forgive me for the times I have compared myself to others or stayed comfortable instead of serving. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I can use what You have given me to bring unity and help to those around me. Give me a willing heart to serve others with love, just as Jesus served us. Amen.
