REFLECTION
The theme of this reflection is “GOD’S GRACE FULFILLED IN JESUS”. To understand this beautiful theme, we must first look at what these words mean. “Grace” is the free, unearned favour, love, and kindness that God pours out on us, even though we do not deserve it. To be “fulfilled” means to be brought to complete perfection, fully realised, and finished. “Jesus” is God the Son, who came to earth to rescue us. Therefore, the theme tells us that God’s wonderful, undeserved love reached its absolute highest and perfect point in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
The key lesson in this Scripture passage is that while God gave us His rules and standards through the Law of Moses, His perfect love, kindness, and truth are fully given to us through Jesus. Jesus is the ultimate proof of God’s favour.
To understand the background of John 1:9-17, we must note that the Apostle John wrote this Gospel to show everyone who Jesus truly is. At the very start of his book, John describes Jesus not just as a human teacher, but as the eternal Word of God who created the entire universe. These verses describe the historic moment when this eternal Light stepped into our dark, broken world to bring new life to humanity.
1. Jesus Is the True Light Who Makes Us God’s Children
The first key lesson from John 1:9-13 is that Jesus came as a light to guide us, offering us the wonderful gift of becoming part of God’s family. The text says: “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” (John 1:9). Even though Jesus created the world, many people did not recognise Him or welcome Him. However, John gives us a powerful promise: “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).
To understand this practically, imagine a lonely orphan living on the cold streets with no family, no home, and no hope. Suddenly, a good and loving King adopts this child, gives them his royal name, and welcomes them into his palace forever. The child did nothing to earn this; it is a pure gift. This is exactly what God’s grace does for us through Jesus. He rescues us from spiritual loneliness and makes us His own sons and daughters. This is supported by Romans 8:15, which tells us: “The Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.”
2. God’s Grace Became Visible by Living Among Us
The second key lesson is found in John 1:14, which shows us that grace is not just an abstract idea or a concept in a book. Grace is a person. John writes: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14). God became a real human being in Jesus so that we could see His glory up close.
Think about a parent whose small child is frightened of a thunderstorm in the middle of the night. The parent does not just call out rules from another room. Instead, the parent goes into the child’s bedroom, sits closely on the bed, and wraps their arms around them. By becoming human, Jesus came to sit with us in our dark and fearful world. He showed us God’s grace through His gentle behavior, His healing power, and His willingness to forgive our mistakes.
3. Jesus Brings an Endless Supply of Grace
The third key lesson from John 1:16-17 is that the favour Jesus offers never runs out, and it completely supersedes the old law. The Scripture states: “Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17). The Law of Moses was good because it showed us God’s right standards, but it could not change our hearts or save us from our sins. Jesus, however, brought the full solution.
Imagine a dry, cracked desert that suddenly receives a tiny drop of water. That drop is like the old law—it was helpful, but not enough. Now imagine a massive, overwhelming downpour of rain that turns the desert into a flowing river. That is the grace of Jesus. It is an endless, refreshing supply of love that replaces our guilt with total forgiveness. As Ephesians 2:8 reminds us: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God”.
Conclusion
In summary, John 1:9-17 beautifully teaches us that God’s grace is perfectly completed in Jesus. He is the true light who rescues us from darkness and gives us the right to be called children of God. He left heaven to live among us, and out of His endless fullness, He pours out wave after wave of love and truth that rules and laws could never give us.
A Call to Action
Because of this amazing truth, you are invited to make a choice today. Stop trying to earn God’s love through your own perfect efforts or living under the heavy weight of guilt and fear. Instead, actively open your heart to receive the light of Jesus. Trust completely in His finished work on the cross. Let His grace change the way you see yourself, and commit to showing this same unearned kindness, patience, and love to the people around you every day.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the beautiful gift of Your unearned favour. Thank You that “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” We are truly grateful that You did not leave us alone in our spiritual darkness, but sent Jesus to be our True Light.
Lord, help us to fully grasp what it means to be Your children. When we feel weak or guilty, remind us that “out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.” Forgive us for the times we try to rely on our own strength instead of trusting in Your love.
Give us the courage to walk in Your truth every single day. Let Your Holy Spirit fill us so completely that we become lights to the people around us, sharing the same grace and truth that came through Jesus Christ. We commit our lives into Your hands.
In the precious name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, we pray.
Amen.
