REFLECTION
The journey of the Christian life is not a static one; it is a continuous path of transformation. At the heart of this journey is the theme “GROWING IN UNDERSTANDING.” To truly grasp what this means, we must first look at the keywords. “Growing” means to develop, mature, or increase in size and quality over time. It shows that we are not meant to stay the same. “Understanding” goes beyond simply knowing facts in our heads. It means having a deep, spiritual insight into God’s truth and knowing how to apply it to our daily choices. The key lesson in Colossians 1:3-12 is that spiritual growth and deep understanding are gifts from God, which we receive through prayer, and they must lead to a life that pleases Him.
This beautiful passage was written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Colossae. Paul was in prison when he wrote this letter, yet his heart was filled with joy because he heard about the faith and love of these believers. However, false teachers were trying to confuse the Colossians with wrong ideas about God. Therefore, Paul wrote this letter to encourage them to ground themselves deeply in the true knowledge of Jesus Christ, so they would not be blown away by false teachings.
When we look closely at the main body of the text, the first major lesson we learn is that spiritual understanding begins with prayer and divine revelation. Human wisdom is simply not enough to understand the things of God. Paul writes in Colossians 1:9, “For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives.” This shows us that true understanding is a spiritual gift. We cannot force it by our own strength or intellect. For example, a person might read the Bible like a history book and miss the life-changing message inside. But when we pray and ask the Holy Spirit for help, the words become alive. As Psalm 119:130 reminds us, “The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” Growth starts on our knees, asking God to open our spiritual eyes.
The second key lesson is that growing in understanding must lead to a changed lifestyle. God does not give us spiritual insight just to make us smarter; He gives it to change how we live. Paul connects understanding directly to our behaviour in Colossians 1:10, stating that the purpose of this knowledge is “so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” True spiritual understanding always produces good fruit. For instance, if someone truly understands God’s massive forgiveness toward them, they will naturally find it easier to forgive a friend who has hurt them. If we claim to understand God’s love but hold onto bitterness, our understanding is incomplete. Our daily actions, kindness, and choices are the real evidence of our spiritual growth.
Finally, the text teaches us that growing in understanding gives us the inner strength to endure difficult times with joy. Paul explains that as we are filled with God’s knowledge, we will be “strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience,” as seen in Colossians 1:11. Life brings many challenges, such as illness, loss, or financial trouble. Without understanding God’s goodness and His bigger plan, it is easy to give up or become angry. However, when we understand that God is always working for our good, we receive the supernatural patience to hold on. A practical example is a mature Christian who faces a difficult trial but remains peaceful and hopeful, inspiring everyone around them because they understand that their trials are temporary, but God’s love is eternal.
In conclusion, growing in understanding is an essential, lifelong process for every believer. We have seen that this deep understanding comes from God through persistent prayer, that it must show itself through a fruitful and pleasing lifestyle, and that it provides the strength we need to face life’s storms with patience. Now, the call to action for each of us is clear: we must stop being casual about our spiritual lives. We need to intentionally commit to reading God’s Word daily and asking the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts. Let us actively look for ways to put what we learn into practice by loving our neighbors, serving our communities, and honoring God with our choices.
Prayer
“Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for the wonderful truth of Your Word. We humbly ask that You fill us with the knowledge of Your will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives. Help us to live lives that are completely worthy of You, pleasing You in every single way. May we bear good fruit in all that we do, and may we continue to grow closer to You every day. Give us the strength and patience to endure hard times with joy, always remembering Your great love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
