REFLECTION

The theme for this reflection is “TOGETHER BECAUSE OF HIM”. To understand this deeply, we must look at what these words mean. ‘Together’ means being united, gathered in one place, or working as one family instead of being divided. ‘Because of Him’ means that this unity is not something human beings can create by themselves. It happens only through the power, presence, and grace of a specific person—the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ. The key lesson in Isaiah 11:1-10 is that true peace, safety, and unity among different or even opposing groups can only be achieved when people gather under the leadership and righteous rule of God’s chosen King.

To understand this scripture, we must look at its historical background. The Prophet Isaiah lived during a terrifying time for the kingdom of Judah. The cruel and powerful Assyrian Empire was conquering northern nations and threatening to destroy Jerusalem. King Ahaz and the people were deeply afraid, and society was broken by political fear and spiritual darkness. It looked like the royal family line of King David was about to be cut down like a tree, leaving nothing but a dead stump. It was into this hopeless situation that God gave Isaiah a beautiful vision of a future Ruler who would bring absolute harmony to the world.

Body: The Source and Shape of True Unity

The first major lesson from this text is that true unity starts with a transformation from God, not from political agreements. Isaiah promises that a new leader will come from the ruined family line. “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.” (Isaiah 11:1). This leader is Jesus. He succeeds because He is filled with the Holy Spirit. “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord” (Isaiah 11:2). Because He rules with perfect justice and protects the poor, He changes human hearts. When human hearts are changed by Him, the walls that divide us come tumbling down.

The text then shows us a beautiful, practical picture of what happens when we are gathered “BECAUSE OF HIM”. Isaiah uses animals that are natural enemies to show how Christ creates peace. “The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.” (Isaiah 11:6). In the natural world, a wolf eats a lamb, and a leopard destroys a goat. Yet, under the rule of Christ, these natural enemies live together in total safety. “The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.” (Isaiah 11:7).

In our daily lives, this means that people from different tribes, races, social backgrounds, or political groups can live in perfect harmony when Jesus is at the centre. For example, in a local church, you might find an employer and a low-paid worker, or people from warring communities, sitting side by side, sharing a meal, and praying for each other. They do this because their old, aggressive natures have been changed by Christ. They no longer see each other as threats, just as “The infant will play near the cobra’s den, and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest.” (Isaiah 11:8). Christ removes the spiritual poison of hatred and fear from our relationships.

Finally, the text emphasises that this unity spreads across the entire world as people get to know God personally. “They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” (Isaiah 11:9). When Jesus is raised up as our leader, He acts like a massive flag that gathers everyone together. “In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting-place will be glorious.” (Isaiah 11:10). We are not unified because we agree on everything; we are unified because we are all looking at the same Saviour.

Conclusion

In summary, Isaiah 11:1-10 teaches us that human efforts cannot fix a broken, divided world. True unity is a gift from God that comes through the leadership of Jesus Christ. He transforms our aggressive, selfish human tendencies so that natural enemies can become brothers and sisters. He stands as a glorious banner, drawing people from every background into one peaceful family.

Therefore, you are warmly invited to take action today. Stop trying to find peace through human arguments or social status. Instead, surrender your heart completely to the rule of Christ. Actively seek to build bridges with people who are different from you in your school, workplace, or neighbourhood. Let us intentionally gather with others under His banner of love, proving to the world that we are truly “TOGETHER BECAUSE OF HIM”.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for sending Jesus Christ to be our righteous King and the source of our peace. We confess that our world is deeply divided by fear, anger, and prejudice. We ask that Your Holy Spirit rest upon us, giving us wisdom and understanding. Change our hearts so that we can live in harmony with others, even those who seem very different from us. Help our communities and churches to stand as a banner of unity, showing Your love to the world. Gather us closer to You, so that we may truly be together because of Him. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
