REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “Ready to serve” The theme “BE READY TO SERVE” is a powerful call to action for every believer. To understand this theme, we must look at what these words mean. To “be ready” means to be prepared, alert, and waiting for something to happen at any moment. “To serve” means to perform duties for a master with humility, love, and faithfulness.
The key lesson in Luke 12:35-48 is that followers of Jesus Christ must live in a state of continuous spiritual readiness. We must faithfully manage the responsibilities God has given us because Jesus will return at a time we do not expect.
Historically, Jesus spoke these words to His disciples during His journey toward Jerusalem. In the ancient Near East, weddings were massive community events, and the exact time the master would return home from a wedding banquet was highly unpredictable. Servants had to remain fully awake and active throughout the night to welcome their master. Jesus used this familiar cultural setting to teach a deep spiritual lesson about His own second coming.
Key Lessons and Practical Application
The first major lesson from the text is the requirement of continuous alertness and action. Jesus opens this teaching by saying, “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning” (Luke 12:35). In the ancient world, being “dressed ready” involved tucking one’s long outer robes into a belt so that movement was not hindered. Keeping the lamps burning meant ensuring there was enough oil so the light would not go out in the dark.
For us today, this means we must not become spiritually lazy. We must keep our hearts clean and our faith active. For example, a modern Christian stays ready by maintaining a daily habit of prayer and reading God’s Word. This keeps our spiritual “lamps” burning bright so that we are not caught off guard by life’s trials or Christ’s return. Jesus rewards this readiness with a beautiful promise: “It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes” (Luke 12:37).
The second lesson is that leadership and service require deep faithfulness. When Peter asked who this message was for, Jesus replied with another question: “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?” (Luke 12:42). God has trusted each of us with specific gifts, time, and resources. We are called to use these assets to bless others, not to serve our own selfish desires.
In contrast, Jesus warns against the wicked servant who says in his heart, “My master is taking a long time in coming”, and begins to abuse others and live wildly (Luke 12:45). A practical example of being a wise manager today is a church leader, a parent, or a manager at work who treats people with kindness and fairness. They do their work honestly, knowing that they are ultimately serving God. We must remember that accountability is tied to what we know and have received, as the text closes with a solemn rule: “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked” (Luke 12:48).
Conclusion
In summary, Luke 12:35-48 teaches us that Christian service is not a part-time job. It requires us to keep our spiritual robes tucked in, our lamps brightly lit, and our hearts faithful to the tasks God has given us. We must reject the temptation to become lazy or careless just because the Master seems to delay His return.
Therefore, let us make a conscious choice today to live intentionally. Examine your life: Are your spiritual lamps burning? Are you using your time and talents to help others and glorify God? Let us step forward into our daily environments—our homes, workplaces, and communities—with a renewed commitment to “be ready to serve” at all times.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of serving in Your kingdom. We ask that You forgive us for the times we have been lazy, distracted, or selfish with the blessings You have given us. Fill us afresh with Your Holy Spirit so that our lamps may always burn brightly. Grant us the wisdom and faithfulness to be good managers of Your grace. Help us to live every single day with an alert heart, eagerly waiting for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. In His holy name, we pray. Amen.
