REFLECTION
Introduction
The journey of human life is marked by distinct seasons, moving from the energy of early years to the quiet frailty of later life. The theme “Youth and Age” invites us to look honestly at this progression. Youth is the early period of life characterised by physical strength, enthusiasm, freshness, and opportunity. Age, or old age, refers to the later stage of life marked by maturity, declining physical vigour, and the accumulation of years. The central lesson of Ecclesiastes 11:9–12:7 is simple yet profound: we must enjoy our youth and live purposefully, but we must never forget that life is fleeting and God will hold us accountable for how we spend our days.
The Book of Ecclesiastes is traditionally attributed to King Solomon, who wrote as the “Teacher” or “Preacher.” Reflecting on life after searching for meaning through wealth, pleasure, and wisdom, the writer addresses young people directly. He urges them not to waste their prime years chasing vanity, but to anchor their lives in God before the inevitable challenges of ageing arrive.
Lessons from the Passage
1. Enjoy Youth with Godly Responsibility
The Teacher encourages young people to celebrate the joy and opportunities of their early years. Ecclesiastes 11:9 states: “You who are young, be happy while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.”
God does not oppose happiness or ambition. However, true freedom is not lawlessness; every choice carries moral weight. A young person pursuing an education, a career, or social relationships should embrace these blessings with gratitude while avoiding dishonesty, selfishness, or reckless living. In supporting this truth, the Apostle Paul similarly advises in 1 Timothy 4:12: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”
2. Put God First Before the Difficult Days Arrive
The text moves into an urgent command in Ecclesiastes 12:1: “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, ‘I find no pleasure in them.’”
To “remember” God means to honour Him, seek His guidance, and offer Him the best of our energy, rather than turning to Him only when our strength is gone. A young professional who commits their skills and early earnings to serving God and helping others builds a solid spiritual foundation that endures for a lifetime.
3. Recognise the Reality and Frailty of Ageing
In Ecclesiastes 12:2–7, the writer uses poetic metaphors to describe the physical decline of the body during old age: the trembling hands (“the keepers of the house tremble”), the weakened legs (“the strong men stoop”), failing eyesight (“those looking through the windows grow dim”), and failing hearing. Finally, life draws to a close: “and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it” (Ecclesiastes 12:7).
Ageing is a natural reality that none of us can escape. Recognising that our physical strength is temporary prevents us from becoming proud. It also teaches us to respect and care for the elderly in our communities, while treasuring each day as a gift from God. As the Psalmist writes in Psalm 90:12: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Conclusion
The passage of time is swift and certain. Youth is filled with energy, vision, and potential, while age brings frailty alongside the harvest of the choices made in earlier years. The Teacher reminds us that our earthly journey concludes with an eternal meeting with our Maker.
Let us therefore decide today not to postpone our devotion to God. If you are young, offer the strength of your days to the Lord and live with integrity. If you are older, find comfort in God’s faithfulness and guide the younger generation with wisdom and love. Let each of us live intentionally, so that when our earthly body returns to dust, our legacy will bring glory to God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You are the Creator of all seasons and the Lord of our days. We thank You for the gift of life, for the vitality of youth, and for the wisdom that comes with age. Teach us to number our days and to remember You in all that we do. Guard our hearts from reckless pursuits and guide our steps in righteousness. Grant us the grace to use our time, talents, and strength to honour You, so that whether in the strength of youth or the weakness of old age, our lives may always reflect Your glory and love. In the precious name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
