REFLECTION

Human beings have always searched for answers to life’s deepest questions. The theme “The Way to Wisdom” invites us to explore how true insight is found. In this context, “the way” refers to the path, direction, or lifestyle one must follow, while “wisdom” means the ability to understand life from God’s perspective and make sound moral choices. The central lesson of Job 28:20–28 is simple: true wisdom is not a hidden treasure we can dig out of the earth or buy with wealth; it is a gift discovered only through a reverent relationship with God. In the book of Job, after losing his family, wealth, and health, Job endures long debates with his friends about why he is suffering. In chapter 28, Job pauses the arguments and reflects on how humans can mine silver, gold, and precious gems from the dark depths of the earth, yet remain entirely powerless to unearth genuine understanding on their own.

Job begins by asking the defining question: “Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell?” (Job 28:20 NIV). He explains that it is hidden from the eyes of every living thing and cannot be purchased with pure gold, silver, or precious onyx (Job 28:21, 15–16 NIV). This reveals the first key lesson: human intelligence, academic success, and financial resources cannot produce divine wisdom. We often see people with high qualifications and great wealth make choices that destroy their homes and peace of mind. A university degree gives knowledge, but it cannot teach character or inner peace. As Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV) reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Job then points us to the only true source: “God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells” (Job 28:23 NIV). God established the force of the wind, measured the waters, and set a limit for the rain (Job 28:25–26 NIV). Because God created and sustains the universe, He alone holds complete understanding. When we face confusing trials—such as sudden sickness, job loss, or strained family ties—our limited human minds cannot see the full picture. During such times, we must turn to God in prayer rather than relying on our own opinions. As the apostle James affirms, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5 NIV).

The climax of the passage provides the practical compass for daily living: “And he said to the human race, ‘The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding’” (Job 28:28 NIV). True wisdom is practical, not merely theoretical. “The fear of the Lord” does not mean being terrified of God; it means honouring, respecting, and loving Him so deeply that we desire to please Him above all else. Shunning evil is the natural fruit of this reverent heart. For instance, in our workplaces or schools, when there is an opportunity to cheat, take a bribe, or spread malicious gossip, the person walking in wisdom chooses integrity because they know God sees all things. As Proverbs 9:10 (NIV) declares, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

True wisdom cannot be bought in a market, discovered in a laboratory, or invented through human reasoning. It begins and ends with God. Finding the way to wisdom requires two daily choices: holding God in absolute reverence and actively turning away from anything that displeases Him. Let us stop relying solely on our own understanding or running after the fleeting opinions of the world. Make the deliberate decision today to study God’s Word daily, honour Him in your private choices, and turn your back on evil.

Heavenly Father, I thank You because You alone are the source of all true wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Forgive me for the times I have relied only on my human strength, intellect, and worldly wisdom. Teach my heart to fear and honour You every single day. Grant me the grace and courage to turn away from every form of evil, in my thoughts, words, and actions. Guide my steps in the path of truth, and help me to live a life that brings glory to Your holy name. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
