REFLECTION

The theme for this reflection is “Behind the Scenes.” When we speak of something happening “behind the scenes,” we refer to work, preparation, or actions that take place out of public view or beyond human sight. While human eyes focus on the visible stage of life, unseen movements are continuously taking place. Throughout Scripture, this theme teaches us two vital truths: God is always at work to protect His people even when His hand is not visibly acknowledged, and evil schemes hatched in private will ultimately face divine justice in the open.

A striking backdrop to this truth is found in the book of Esther, a book that uniquely does not mention the name of God once. In the background of Esther 7:1–10, Haman, an arrogant noble elevated by King Xerxes, had manipulated the king into signing an empire-wide decree to exterminate every Jewish man, woman, and child. Unknown to Haman, Queen Esther was herself Jewish, placed upon the Persian throne through what seemed to be a succession of ordinary events. After days of fasting and prayer, Esther invited the king and Haman to a private banquet. Esther 7:1–10 captures the decisive climax at this second banquet, demonstrating how God’s hidden providence brings silent purposes into sudden light.

1. Unseen Preparation Leads to Perfect Divine Timing

In Esther 7:1–4, King Xerxes and Haman dined with Queen Esther. When the king asked for the third time what her petition was, Esther seized the exact moment, identifying herself with her condemned people and pleading for their survival. Behind this dramatic moment lay months of silent preparation: the courage of Mordecai, the sleepless night of King Xerxes where past loyalty records were reviewed, and Esther’s measured, patient approach.

Nothing in God’s kingdom happens by accident. While life may feel stagnant or full of uncertainty, God is working quietly behind the scenes to arrange people, opportunities, and moments for His redemptive will. We see this principle reinforced in Romans 8:28, where Scripture reminds us that God works all things together for the ultimate good of those who love Him. In our daily lives, seasons of waiting, hidden sacrifice, or quiet diligence are never wasted; they are the unseen workshop where God prepares us to stand firm when the defining moment arrives.

2. The Exposure of Hidden Motives and Pride

In Esther 7:5–6, King Xerxes asked who would dare to carry out such an atrocity. Esther boldly replied that the adversary was none other than the vile Haman sitting before them. Haman, who believed his influence and deceit were secure, was instantly terrified. What had been plotted in secret chambers and sealed with a royal signet was brought into the open daylight.

Scripture consistently reveals that no scheme is hidden from the eyes of God. In Luke 12:2–3, we are taught that whatever is concealed will be revealed, and whatever is spoken in private will be proclaimed from the rooftops. In our modern walk, we often face unfair treatment, unspoken prejudice, or quiet betrayals at work or within our communities. We are reminded not to take revenge into our own hands. God sees the heart, evaluates every motive, and defends the cause of the humble when they trust Him.

3. The Reversal of Evil: Divine Justice

In Esther 7:7–10, the scene culminated in rapid, total reversal. Haman begged Esther for his life, but his actions only further incensed the king. Harbona, one of the royal attendants, pointed out the gallows seventy-five feet high that Haman had constructed beside his house specifically to hang Mordecai. The king commanded that Haman be impaled upon those very gallows.

The instrument of death Haman had prepared in pride became his own undoing. This outcome echoes the truth of Proverbs 26:27, which warns that whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and whoever rolls a stone will have it roll back upon them. God’s behind-the-scenes governance ensures that righteousness will eventually prevail over oppression. When evil appears to have the upper hand, we can rest in the assurance that God’s justice cannot be outwitted.

Conclusion and Call to Action

The events of Esther 7:1–10 remind us that what we observe on the surface is never the whole story. God directs the course of history without shouting, placing His servants in strategic places and dismantling the plots of the wicked from the inside out.

Therefore, let us answer this truth with two practical commitments:

  1. Walk by Faith, Not by Sight: When you cannot trace God’s hand in your current circumstances, trust His heart. Do not panic when facing hostility or uncertainty; continue to do what is right, knowing that Heaven is actively engaged on your behalf.
  2. Cultivate Integrity in Secret: Since God works and sees behind the scenes, live a life that honours Him when nobody is watching. Reject deceit, pride, and compromise, seeking instead to be an instrument of truth and hope.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Lord who works behind the scenes of our lives. When our path seems dark and our challenges seem overwhelming, help us to remember that You never sleep nor slumber. Cleanse our hearts of all secret pride and unrighteousness. Grant us the courage of Esther to stand for truth, and give us patient trust to rest in Your justice and timing. We place our lives, our families, and our futures into Your faithful hands, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
