CALLING OF THE FIRST DISCIPLES (LUKE 5:1-11)

REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “Calling of the first disciples.” A disciple is a personal follower of Christ during his life, especially one of the twelve Apostles. Again, a disciple is one who has accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour and follows His teachings and examples. We shall reflect on the fact that to become a disciple of Jesus, you must trust and obey Him.

Beloved in the Lord, to become disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ we must trust and obey Him. Before Jesus called the first disciples, He tested their willingness and ability to trust and obey him when he said to Simon Peter after they had fished without success, Jesus said to him, Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” (Luke 5:4-5) Reading from the text it seems Simon Peter obeyed Jesus, but in fact, he obeyed with doubts in his heart about the possibility of catching any fish. His doubt was exposed when indeed they had had a bountiful harvest of fish. “When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signalled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:6-8) Dear friend in Christ, to become true disciples of Christ we must be ready to trust and obey Jesus or demonstrate an unshakable faith in Him. In other words, our trust in Christ must have no iota of doubt. Fear breeds doubts therefore “Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.” (Luke 5:10-11)

In summary, we have discovered that to become disciples of Jesus we must trust and obey Him. Shalom.
