REFLECTION

Introduction

The theme for this reflection is “IMMORTAL, INVISIBLE BUT INVOLVED”. To understand this message fully, we must first look at the key terms. Immortal means living forever and never dying; God is eternal, without beginning or end. Invisible means unable to be seen with human eyes; God is Spirit, so we cannot see Him physically. Involved means taking an active part in something, caring deeply, and intervening in the daily lives of people.

The key lesson from Hosea 11:1-11 is that although God is eternal and unseen, He is not distant or uncaring. Instead, He is deeply and lovingly involved in every detail of our lives.

The prophet Hosea ministered to the northern kingdom of Israel (often called Ephraim) during a time of great spiritual decay. The people had turned away from God to worship false idols, trusting in foreign political alliances rather than in their Heavenly Father. In Hosea 11:1-11, God speaks with the tender heart of a loving parent, reminding Israel of how He raised them, cared for them, and loved them right from the beginning, even though they continually rejected Him.

Understanding God’s Loving Involvement

1. God Nurtures and Sustains Us Privately

In the scripture text, God compares His relationship with Israel to a parent raising a young child. Hosea 11:1-4 says: “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son… It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; but they did not realise it was I who healed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them.”

Even when we do not see God, He is actively guiding us, healing us, and feeding us. Think of a mother holding a toddler by the arms as the child takes its very first steps. The child may feel like it is walking all by itself, but it is the mother’s strong hands that keep the toddler from falling. In the same way, many times in our daily lives, we experience success, good health, and safety, yet we forget that our invisible God is the One holding us up. As Psalm 121:3-4 reminds us: “He will not let your foot slip—He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”

2. God Corrects Us in Love, Not Destruction

Although God’s people turned away from Him to worship idols, His love never failed. Hosea 11:8-9 reveals the deep emotional compassion of our Heavenly Father: “How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel?… My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused. I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I devastate Ephraim again. For I am God, and not a man—the Holy One among you.”

Human beings often reject or discard those who hurt them, but God is not like man. Because He is immortal and holy, His love is pure, steadfast, and forgiving. When we wander away or make mistakes, His corrections are meant to draw us back to Him, not to destroy us. For instance, when a young person strays into bad company and faces painful consequences, God uses those moments to awaken their heart so they can return to safety. As Hebrews 12:6 tells us: “The Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises everyone He accepts as His son.”

3. God Calls and Restores His People

Our unseen God actively works behind the scenes to restore our lives. Hosea 11:10-11 states: “They will follow the LORD; He will roar like a lion. When He roars, His children will come trembling from the west… ‘I will settle them in their homes,’ declares the LORD.”

When God speaks through His word and Spirit, His voice is powerful enough to gather us back from every place of fear, sin, and despair. Consider someone who has spent years bound by bad habits or depression; when they hear the gospel and yield to God, they experience total transformation and peace. God involved Himself directly in human history by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to save us. As John 3:16 promises: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Conclusion

In summary, our God is eternal (Immortal) and spirit (Invisible), yet He is intimately Involved in our daily experiences. He teaches us, holds us, protects us from harm, corrects us with gentle compassion, and promises to restore our lives when we return to Him.

Call to Action:

Do not live as though God is far away or unconcerned about your struggles. Take time today to acknowledge His presence in your life. Surrender your burdens, bad habits, and worries to Him. Trust Him as your loving Heavenly Father, and choose to walk closely with Him in obedience every single day.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are the immortal and invisible God, yet You care so deeply for me. Thank You for holding my hands, feeding me, and protecting me even when I do not realise it. Forgive me for the times I have forgotten Your goodness or turned away from Your ways. Help me to hear Your loving voice and to walk in faithful obedience to You every day. Settle my heart in Your peace and guide my path continually. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
