SUNDAY REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “SURELY THE LORD IS IN THIS PLACE”. To understand this powerful statement, we must look at its key words. “Surely” means without any doubt; it speaks of absolute certainty. “The Lord” refers to the Almighty God, the supreme Creator who rules over all. “In this place” refers not just to a physical building or location, but to any situation, trial, or moment in our daily lives. Therefore, the theme reminds us that God is truly present with us, even when we do not realise it. The key lesson in our Scripture readings is that God’s presence brings comfort, hope, and an assurance of His promises, which requires us to live righteously as His children.
To understand our main text, we need a brief historical background. In Genesis 28:10-19, Jacob was in a desperate situation. He was running away from his home because his twin brother, Esau, wanted to kill him for stealing his birthright and blessing. Jacob was alone, terrified, and sleeping in a lonely desert place with nothing but a stone for his pillow. He felt completely abandoned, but it was in that exact place of fear that God chose to reveal Himself to him.
Firstly, God’s presence is real even when we feel alone or abandoned. When Jacob was at his lowest point, he had a miraculous dream. The Bible tells us: “He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the LORD, and he said: ‘I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.’” (Genesis 28:12-13). When Jacob woke up, he exclaimed, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” (Genesis 28:16).
In our daily lives, we often face difficult moments that feel like Jacob’s desert. We might experience sudden illness, financial distress, or the loss of a loved one. In those dark times, we might think God has forgotten us. But this text persuades us that God is right there in the midst of our pain. Practical examples of this abound today; when we survive terrible accidents, or when we receive unexpected peace during a painful family crisis, it is because God is there. We can say with confidence that “Surely the Lord is in this place.”
Secondly, being aware of God’s presence changes how we live and reassures us of our identity as His children. We do not need to live in fear because the Holy Spirit lives within us. Paul reminds us of this relationship in Romans 8:14-17: “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”
Because we are God’s children, His presence is not temporary; it stays with us through the Holy Spirit. For example, when Stephen faced a furious crowd that wanted to stone him, he was not afraid because he was aware of God’s presence. The Bible says he was “…full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. And he said, ‘Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’” (Acts 7:55-56). Knowing that God is in our place gives us the courage to face any earthly suffering.
Finally, because the Lord is in our midst, we must remain faithful and righteous, refusing to be influenced by evil. In Matthew 13:24-30, Jesus tells the parable of the weeds and the wheat growing together. The devil tries to plant bad things (“weeds”) where God has planted good things (“wheat”). But a time of separation is coming. Jesus explained that “‘As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear’” (Matthew 13:40-43).
Since God is present in our world and watches over our lives, we must live to please Him. We cannot afford to compromise our faith by behaving like the “weeds” of this world. Sin robs us of the joy of God’s presence, as Paul states: “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). To truly enjoy the presence of God every day, we must follow the advice of James 1:22, which says, “…be doers of the word, and not hearers only…” We must trust and obey Him completely. As the famous hymn says:
“When we walk with the Lord / in the light of his word, / what a glory he sheds on our way! / While we do his good will, / he abides with us still, / and with all who will trust and obey. / Trust and obey, for there’s no other way / to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”
In summary, we have learned that “SURELY THE LORD IS IN THIS PLACE”. God is always with us, even in our darkest moments of isolation. We have been adopted as His children, and His Holy Spirit lives within us to give us peace and strength. However, we must also remember that His presence requires us to live holy lives, separating ourselves from the sinful practices of the world.
My call to action to you today is to stop living in fear. Wake up to the reality of God’s presence in your home, your workplace, and your struggles. Commit yourself today to trust Him completely and to obey His Word faithfully, so that you will shine brightly as the righteous in His kingdom.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You because You are an ever-present help in times of trouble. Forgive us for the many times we have doubted Your presence or felt abandoned in our desert moments. Open our spiritual eyes to see and know that surely, You are in this place with us. Grant us the strength through Your Holy Spirit to remain faithful, to avoid sin, and to live as true children of Your covenant. Guide our steps daily, and let Your presence bring peace to our hearts. We ask all these things through our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
