REFLECTION
The theme for this reflection is “The New Way”. To understand this theme, we must look at what it means to live a life transformed by faith. A “way” refers to a path, a method, or a manner of living. When we speak of “The New Way”, we are talking about a completely fresh, life-changing path that God has provided for us through Jesus Christ. The key lesson in Romans 7:1-13 is that believers are released from the old system of following a written law to earn God’s favour. Instead, we are called to serve in a new way guided by the Holy Spirit.
To fully appreciate this, we need to understand the historical background of Paul’s letter to the Romans. The early Church in Rome was made up of both Jewish and Gentile (non-Jewish) believers. The Jewish Christians were struggling to let go of their old traditions. They believed that to be right with God, they still had to strictly follow the Law of Moses. Paul wrote this section to explain that Jesus changed everything. He used the law of marriage to show that death breaks old legal obligations, clearing the path for something beautiful and new.
The first major lesson Paul teaches is that death brings freedom from the old law. In Romans 7:4, he writes, “So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.”
In the past, people tried to please God by checking off a list of rules. However, human weakness meant they always failed. Paul explains that when Jesus died on the cross, we spiritually died with Him. Because we died, the old law no longer has a legal hold over us. We are now free to belong to Jesus.
Consider a citizen who owes a massive debt to a bank. If that person passes away, the bank can no longer take them to court; the legal relationship is over. In the same way, Christ’s death paid our spiritual debt. This freedom is not an excuse to do whatever we want. Instead, it allows us to live a good life out of love for Jesus, rather than out of fear of punishment. This is supported by Galatians 5:22-23, which reminds us that “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
The second lesson is that the old way actually highlighted our sin, whereas the new way brings genuine inner change. Paul notes in Romans 7:6, “But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.”
The written law was good and holy, but it acted like a mirror. It could show us that our faces were dirty, but it did not have the power to wash them. In fact, when we are told not to do something, our flawed human nature often wants to do it even more. Paul admits this in Romans 7:7: “I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, ‘You shall not covet.’”
For example, if you place a sign on a pristine patch of grass that says “Do Not Walk on the Grass,” people suddenly feel a stronger urge to step on it. The rule itself is fine, but it stirs up the rebellious nature inside us. The written code could only judge us from the outside. “The New Way” of the Spirit changes our hearts from the inside out. We no longer need a written sign telling us to behave because the Holy Spirit lives within us, giving us the desire to please God.
Conclusion
In summary, “The New Way” is a shift from fear to love, and from rules to a relationship. Romans 7:1-13 reminds us that we have died to the old, helpless struggle of trying to save ourselves through our own efforts. We have been released to live a fruitful, joyful life belonging entirely to the risen Christ.
This calls us to action. We must stop relying on our own strength to look good on the outside. Let us stop living by the old code of guilt and pride. Instead, we are invited to surrender daily to the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to guide our thoughts, words, and actions. Choose today to walk away from the old paths of failure and step boldly into the grace, freedom, and power of “The New Way”.
