REFLECTION

In our everyday lives, warnings shape our safety and well-being. A doctor warns of health complications if a lifestyle remains unchanged, road signs alert drivers to steep bends ahead, and weather forecasts urge communities to seek shelter before a storm arrives. Ignoring these indications often brings regret, whereas paying close attention preserves life. This reality mirrors our spiritual journey under the theme: “Signs Need to be Taken Seriously.” In this context, “signs” refer to specific events, indicators, and spiritual alerts given by God to reveal His timeline and warn humanity of what is ahead. To “take seriously” means to treat these warnings with genuine urgency, sober reflection, and active obedience rather than passive curiosity.

In Matthew 24:1–28, the Lord Jesus Christ provides a clear roadmap of the end of the age. Through this passage, three vital lessons emerge: first, we must beware of spiritual deception; second, global disruptions and distress are birth pains pointing to God’s unfolding plan; and third, believers must cultivate enduring faith and active preparation.

The historical setting of this passage opens on the Mount of Olives. As Jesus walked away from the temple in Jerusalem, His disciples marvelled at the magnificence of the temple buildings. Jesus astonished them by stating that not one stone would be left upon another. Deeply unsettled, the disciples came to Him privately, asking: “Tell us, when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3). In response, Jesus delivered the Olivet Discourse—not to satisfy human intrigue about calendar dates, but to equip His followers to recognise spiritual signposts and guard their hearts.

Guarding Against Spiritual Deception

The very first warning Jesus gave was not about wars or earthquakes, but about deception within the human heart. Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many” (Matthew 24:4–5). Later in the chapter, He reinforced this urgency: “At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:23–24).

The primary sign of the end times is a counterfeit spirituality that mimics truth. In our contemporary world, this manifests whenever charismatic voices, modern philosophies, or self-proclaimed spiritual leaders dilute the Gospel, offering peace without repentance or salvation without the cross. Consider a bank teller who handles genuine currency every day; they spot a counterfeit note not by studying every possible fake, but by knowing the authentic note thoroughly. In the same way, we must anchor our lives in Scripture so that flashy wonders and persuasive words do not lead us astray. As the Apostle Paul warned: “Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). Taking the sign of deception seriously means testing every teaching against God’s written Word.

Recognising the Birth Pains of Creation

Jesus further highlighted that physical and geopolitical disruptions are clear indicators of a fallen world drawing closer to judgment and renewal. He stated: “You will hear of wars and rumours of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains” (Matthew 24:6–8).

Jesus deliberately used the metaphor of “birth pains.” An expectant mother knows that labour contractions start gradually and grow in both frequency and intensity as the arrival of the child nears. Today, we observe escalating conflicts, economic instability, natural disasters, and global anxieties. Rather than causing panic, these events should remind us that this present world is fragile and passing away. When an alarm sounds in a building, the goal is not to paralyse people with fear, but to motivate them to exit toward safety. Jesus urged: “See to it that you are not alarmed” (Matthew 24:6). Believers are called to view global crises through the lens of God’s sovereignty, remembering the assurance of the Psalmist: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea” (Psalm 46:1–2).

Enduring Faith Amid Growing Hardship

The third crucial lesson concerns spiritual perseverance in an atmosphere of hostility and moral compromise. Jesus warned of severe trials: “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other… Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:9–10, 12–13).

A cold heart often develops gradually. When wickedness becomes culturally acceptable and standing for righteousness invites ridicule or hardship, the temptation is to compromise and blend in. We witness this today when believers face workplace pressure to compromise integrity, or social isolation for upholding biblical values. Yet Jesus urges steadfast endurance. Consider an athlete running an exhausting marathon; when fatigue and pain set in, the temptation to quit is intense, but keeping the finish line in view provides the strength to continue. Our perseverance is rooted in the promise of eternal life. The Apostle James echoed this truth: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12).

The signs presented in Matthew 24:1–28 are neither vague coincidences nor empty threats; they are divine compass points intended to shake us out of spiritual slumber. We have seen that deception is subtle and pervasive, that global turmoil signals the unfolding of God’s redemptive timeline, and that only endurance through Christ will guard our love from growing cold.

Therefore, let us not treat these signs with casual indifference. If you know that a journey has hazards and an unmistakable destination, you do not travel unprepared. Examine your heart today: has your spiritual passion grown lukewarm? Have you allowed the distractions and pressures of this world to drown out the voice of the Spirit? Now is the time to repent of compromise, commit to daily prayer and Bible study, and live each day as a faithful witness for Jesus Christ. Let us heed the exhortation of Scripture: “The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armour of light” (Romans 13:12).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Almighty God,

We thank You for Your holy and unfailing Word, which serves as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Forgive us for the moments we have lived with spiritual carelessness, ignoring the warnings and signs You have faithfully placed before us.

Lord Jesus, guard our hearts and minds against every form of deception. Grant us divine wisdom and discernment so that we will never be swayed by false voices, empty promises, or the moral decay of our generation. When trials arise and the pressures of life intensify, strengthen our inner being by Your Holy Spirit so that our love for You will never grow cold.

Keep us alert, steadfast, and fruitful until the day of Your glorious return. We place our lives, our families, and our faith firmly in Your hands.

In the precious and mighty name of Jesus Christ our Lord, we pray.

Amen.
