SCRIPTURES READINGS: EXODUSD 33:12-23, 1 THESSALONIANS 1:1-10, MATTHEW 22:15-22

SUNDAY REFLECTION

To “render” means to hand over, restore, yield, or deliver back something to its rightful owner. It implies settling an outstanding debt or giving due recognition where ownership belongs. When Scripture speaks of what is “God’s,” it refers to all that belongs to Him by right of creation, covenant, and redemption: our worship, our absolute allegiance, our hearts, and our very lives. While civil rulers may claim authority over earthly coinage, God alone holds total ownership over the human soul. To render to God what is God’s is to surrender our total being to the Sovereign Creator who made us in His own divine image.

Key Points from the Scripture Texts

1. The Ultimate Allegiance: Giving Back to God What Bears His Image (Matthew 22:15-22)

In Matthew 22:15-22, the Pharisees and Herodians attempted to entrap Jesus with the politically volatile question of paying taxes to Caesar. Examining the tax coin, Jesus asked whose portrait and inscription it bore. When they replied, “Caesar’s,” He delivered the decisive principle: “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s” (Matthew 22:21).

While the denarius bore the image of the Roman emperor and could be returned to him in civic duty, the human being bears the indelible image of Almighty God (Genesis 1:26-27). Therefore, while earthly rulers may claim taxes, money, and civil respect, our worship, moral conscience, and life belong entirely to God. We must never allow civil or secular obligations to usurp the absolute surrender we owe to our Creator.

2. Complete Devotion and Radical Turn from Idols (1 Thessalonians 1:1-10)

In 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10, the Apostle Paul rejoiced because the Thessalonian believers understood what it meant to yield their lives completely to God. Despite facing severe affliction, they rendered their whole hearts to Him: “You turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath” (1 Thessalonians 1:9-10).

Rendering to God what is His requires turning away from modern-day idols—greed, self-reliance, worldly approval, and power. The Thessalonians demonstrated their surrender through their “work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 1:3). Giving God His due is not lip service; it is an active life of faith, holy endurance, and loving obedience.

3. Seeking God’s Presence and Sovereign Glory Above All Else (Exodus 33:12-23)

In Exodus 33:12-23, Moses recognized that nothing matters if God does not possess His rightful place in the midst of His people. Moses refused to take another step toward the Promised Land without God’s abiding presence: “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?” (Exodus 33:15-16).

Moses rendered honor to God by asking for the greatest treasure imaginable: “Now show me your glory” (Exodus 33:18). When we render to God what belongs to Him, we prioritize His presence above worldly prosperity and acknowledge that His grace, holiness, and glory are the supreme guide and reward of our lives.

Conclusion

Our earthly duties as citizens—paying taxes, upholding civic justice, and contributing to national growth—have their valid place. Yet they remain secondary to our heavenly duty. A coin stamped with the emperor’s portrait belongs to the emperor, but the human soul, stamped with the image and breath of God, belongs entirely to the Lord. We cannot give God leftovers of our time, divided loyalty, or nominal worship. To render to God what is God’s means presenting our whole lives as a living, holy, and acceptable offering to Him.

Call to Action

  1. Conduct a Heart Inventory: Identify any modern “idols”—such as wealth, career, status, or secular approval—that compete with God’s claim on your life, and consciously dethrone them.
  2. Offer Total Surrender: Commit your talents, resources, and time intentionally to God’s service this week, recognizing that every breath you take is on loan from Him.
  3. Seek His Presence Daily: Like Moses, refuse to make major life decisions or pursue personal ambitions without first seeking the guidance and presence of God in fervent prayer and His Word.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, the Sovereign Creator and Owner of the universe, we acknowledge that the earth is Yours and everything in it. Forgive us for the moments we have compromised our devotion, giving our best to worldly pursuits while offering You empty words and leftover effort. Lord, just as a coin bears the mark of the mint, our souls bear the divine imprint of Your image. We yield ourselves afresh to You today. Strip away every idol from our hearts. Grant us the courage of the Thessalonians to walk in faith, love, and hope, and grant us the longing of Moses to seek Your manifest presence above every earthly prize. Let our entire lives—our bodies, minds, and spirits—be rendered fully unto You in holy worship and faithful obedience. We pray in the mighty and matchless name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
