Jesus presented at the Temple and Simon witnessed the fulfillment of God’s Salvation through the coming of the Messiah.

REFLECTION

Anticipation is the theme for our reflection. To anticipate means to look ahead or to look forward to something with pleasure. Isreal had anticipated the coming of the Messiah but Simon was one of the few people who had a special revelation and assurance of seeing the Messiah before he departs from the world.

What is of most relevance to Simon is that Jesus’s salvation is for both the Gentiles and the Jews. Africa and all other non-Jewish nations who have experience the Gospel and salvation of our Lord Jesus have seen prophecy fulfilled, for Simon said that “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” (Luke 2:29-30)

My dear friend, today marks the end of the Advent Season however like Simon we continue to anticipate the second coming of our Lord and Master Jesus. Simon was in anticipation of the first coming and it was fulfilled, we are in anticipation of the second coming and it shall be fulfilled. We are further encouraged to anticipate when Paul wrote that “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.” (Thessalonians 4:16-18).

As we in anticipation of the second coming of the Messiah, “…I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:1-2) Shalom.

PRAYER

Thank you Lord for for fulfilling your promise by giving us the Saviour of the world, may the Holy Spirit strengthen us to remain watchful in anticipation of the second coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
