REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “get dressed”. To get dressed means to put on clothes. You are what you wear or the way you dress usually depicts your personality and what you represent. In Africa and I believe in other continents it is easy to identify the tribe or ethnic group a person belongs to just by observing their appearance or dressing. No wonder, there is a cliche that “the way you dress is the way you will be addressed.”

Beloved in the Lord, Paul encourages us through his letter to the Colossians that as believers we must also get dressed in the manner that identifies us as true disciples of Jesus Christ. There is only one dress required of a Christian to wear all the time and this is the dress of unconditional love. Paul wrote, “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” (Colossians 3:14). When we put on the dress of love which is the main garment then we can proceed to put on other decorative apparels, it is for this reason, Paul wrote .that “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” (Colossians 3:12-13). In other words, wherever there is love, there will be compassion, kindness humility, meekness, patience and forgiveness. Dear friend, what kind of dress are you wearing and how do people see you? Is it the the dress of love or hatred, bitterness and vengeance. Is it an unforgiving dress that has made it impossible for you to live at peace with your parents, siblings, congregants, colleagues at work and neighbours? May you be touched by this reflection to remove the old dress and get dressed with love “which binds everything together in perfect harmony” (Colossians 3:14). This is the only way we can please God therefore, “… whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17). The culture of Christianity is love, we manifest the culture of love through our speech, dressing, conduct and in our relationship with other people. Let us always get dressed in love. Shalom.

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, help us to get dressed in love so that the world will know that we are the disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
