SONGS OF REFUGE (2 SAMUEL 22:1-4)

SONGS OF REFUGE (2 SAMUEL 22:1-4)

REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is the “Songs of refuge”. Refuge is the state of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or difficulty. God is our refuge because He shelters us from pursuit, danger or difficulty hence songs of refuge are composed and sang to acknowledge, praise and appreciate God as the source of our protection and sustenance. We are greatly encouraged to reflect on the past and present and sings songs of refuge as a testimony of God’s faithfulness to us.

Beloved in the Lord, David has taught us to be demonstrate gratitude to God by acknowledging and appreciating His glory and faithfulness through singing songs of refuge. We are told that David pondered over his life and came to a firm conclusion that God has been faithful to Him therefore He sang a song refuge to bless the name of the Lord. “David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. 2 He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; 3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior— from violent people you save me. 4 “I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and have been saved from my enemies. (2 Samuel 22:1-4). Dear friends, how often do we sing songs of praise or adoration to celebrate and acknowledge God as our refuge and sustainer of life? Some of us are quick to celebrate and boast of our successes or achievements through wild orgies and merry-making. We fail to go the house of God to observe a thanksgiving service, give testimonies and sing songs of refuge to praise Him for His love, mercy and protection over our lives all these years.

We have every cause to sing songs of refuge to give glory to God and let the world know that “with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26) Many of our Hymns are songs of refuge which resonate or identifies with our lived experience. Again, we may not be able to compose our own songs of refuge like David, but his songs are still relevant for our usage today. There many songs of refuge we can sing to communicate our unqualified gratitude and praise to God. Song of refuge also serve as a form of prayer therefore it can be sung everyday of our lives. God owes us nothing but we owe Him everything including songs of praise and refuge. We owe Him constant acknowledgement or recognition of His awesomeness and glory in lives through songs of refuge and adoration. Dear friend, I want you to look back and consider battles you have won, pains you have endured and attacks you have escaped through the mighty and protective hands of God. Take your Hymnbook and begin to sings songs of refuge and praise His Holy Name! Singing songs of refuge and praise must be intentional and spontaneous, it must not be done only when feel we are in a good mood or think it is appropriate to do so. Whether we are in a good mood or not, happy or sad, in danger or not, we have to sing songs of refuge to demonstrate our faith a faithful God who never forsakes us. I do not know what you are going through right now, but whatever the situation is, remember we serve a faithful and mighty God in whom we “… we live and move and have our being. (Acts 17:28). He is our anchor and waymaker, He creates a path where there is none, and turns our sorrows and pains into joy. He is the God who turned Hannah’s’ barrenness and frustrations into fruitfulness and joy. He turned Joseph’s slavery and mistreatment into an unprecedented majestic elevation as the second in command in Egypt. Oh did I forget to tell remind you that He also turned David, a shepherd and an nonentity into an enviable King? What you are going through today has already being experienced by a man or woman of faith in the past, I am submitting to you that God is our refuge because “the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:12-13)

In summary, we have reflected on the theme “Songs of refuge”, as worshippers and believers, we must always reflect on the past and present and sings songs of refuge as a testimony of God’s glory and faithfulness to us. Shalom.

PRAYER

The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever. Amen (Psalms 23)
