HERE I AM (1 SAMUEL 3:1-21)
REFLECTION
“Here I am” is the theme for our reflection. “Here I am” is a statement in response to someone searching for or looking for you. It is the willingness to be found by whoever is calling us. We shall reflect on the fact that to prove our readiness to serve God faithfully, we must be willing to respond to His call by saying ““Here I am;.., “Speak, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:8,10)
Beloved in the Lord, Samuel’s ears were attentive even though he was asleep. Samuel demonstrated his willingness to faithfully serve in the House of God therefore anytime he heard his name being called “Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” (1 Samuel 3:6). The fact is that after the second time, some children of Samuel’s age will act deaf and refuse to respond to their parent’s call. They would want to be left alone to enjoy their sleep interrupted. Other children may simply say in reply to the call “I am not feeling well, Daddy please call someone else” Even in our congregations, many of us give excuses when they are called upon to serve in various capacities. We give excuses with our work and businesses or make up convincing excuses just to avoid the call to serve God and humanity. Dear friend, one of the ways to demonstrate our eagerness to serve God faithfully is when we respond “Here I am;” (1 Samuel 3:6). The Lord can call us through various means. He can call us through miraculous occurrences (Exodus 3:2-5), appointments (The calling of the 12 disciples), dreams, visions and through the leaders of the church. It does not matter how we receive the call to serve the Lord, our answer must be “Here I am;.., “Speak, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:8,10)
Beloved in the Lord, at every given time and in every era and generation, God calls those who are willing to serve Him and He uses them for His glory and for the edification of His people. It is a great privilege and honour to serve the almighty God. It is for this reason that Isaiah heard the call ““Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? ”And He said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8). God calls us to serve Him because He has deposited immeasurable talents and spiritual gifts in us. The Psalmist confirmed “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Psalms 139:14). Again, God will not call animals to serve Him because He created them for our consumption, however, God will always call us to serve Him because “God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27). It is for this reason, that we must always be ready to faithfully respond to God’s call by saying “Here I am;.., “Speak, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:8,10) without any form of habitual excuse. Jesus greatly admonished us, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. (Luke 9:23-26).
In summary, we have reflected on the theme “Here I am” We have discovered that to prove our readiness to serve God faithfully, we must be willing to respond to His call by saying ““Here I am;..,“Speak, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:8,10). Shalom.
